Elegy

This then, dedicated to a friend, who did not deserve to die as she did, or as young as she did, or before she had had a chance to see, do, think, and hear all she had wanted to.

But dying is hardly what we will remember her for!

We remember her for how she lived, and all she saw and spoke of, thought and for when she spent hours hearing us patiently. We remember all she did, and all she would've but for an unruly, stupid cell or two within.

Fate, be warned. We have yet another bone to pick with you.

Elegy

Resoundingly empty
I drift along
These paths uncertain
That folly comes a haunting...

Listen to the wind
Its keening cries
On so many faces wizened
Furrows are a forming

Winter threatens the world
All its glacial peace
Deceives, hides within
Death; cold yet prancing

From this ugly visage
So sudden to attack
What light defends us now?
As the dark comes a taunting...

Bring me then, one more time,
All your foolish fancies
Grand dreams of forever
And of love enchanting

Let your lilting music,
Ride yon gelid wind
Smile now a-purpose
With beauty, joy, and wanting...

Suffuse me once more, friend
With a touch of radiant hope
Let's reminisce of summers past
And speak of futures heartening

What was is immortal
There friends are never lost
Tell me what comes unwritten
All need not be so daunting

To that day then
When this life too is done
Let's You, I, these others
Our verve go on a flaunting

And beyond, hope for another
Who in death's hoary face
Struck with silly optimism
Our names will go a chanting...
