Thought I'd do a quick retrospective of movies I've seen in this year... not detailed reviews, but a "best of/ worst of" type list.
Most of these have been reviewed on this selfsame blog before... so I wont repeat the reviews (I'm tired of blogging at length these days anyway).
So without much further ado, here are what I think were the best movies I watched in 2006:
The Best of 2006 (in order of likometer reading)
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - MIND BLOWING STUFF. Johnny Depp rocks!
- A Scanner Darkly - Mind twisting stuff from Richard Linklater
- Inside Man - Smartest heist movie ever! And both the cop and robber win!
- The Departed - Gritty ensemble drama, not as good as say, Casino, but up there.
- X Men: The Last Stand - Shiveringly frightful action, cool homage to the comics (and no, I don't think they mutilated the Phoenix saga)
- Casino Royale - I liked Daniel Craig and he's definitely a Bond for the 21st century. He gets hurt, he has ambiguous motivations, and he is a numbed sentimentalist!
- Mission Impossible 3 - Ethan Hunt recovereth from the idiotic MI:2
- Cars - Heart-warming tale of ambition and friendship. Nice twist at the end.
- The Lake House - The year's best love story, and a time twist tale to boot!
- Deja Vu - What can I say? I'm a sucker for Bruckheimer's shenanigans and time travel tales both. Double score!
Some honorable mentions that made the top 15, but not 10 (in no particular order):
- 16 Blocks - Nice, but done SO many times before.
- Eragon - Cheap budgets do not a LOTR/ Star Wars clone make.
- Ice Age: The Meltdown - It ain't funny when it is repititive.
- Superman Returns - got some stuff right, but the premise wrong. And Lex wrong! :(
- The Da Vinci Code - Started with mediocre writing to begin with, still ok effort.
- Just Like Heaven - I liked this because of the formula rom-com elements contrasting with Mark Ruffalo's performance. Nice.
The VERY WORST of 2006 that I saw (didn't see too many bad ones thankfully)
- The Wicker Man - OH!!! MY LEGS, MY LEGS... *shiver*
- You, Me, and Dupree - Good Lord it ISN'T funny
- The Omen - Didn't even have to see this one to hate it. Why remake it at all?
And now here are the movies I wanted to watch but did not watch (in alphabetical order):
- An Inconvenient Truth - Al Gore's global warming documentary
- Apocalypto - Mel Gibson's take on the Mayans
- Babel - Looking interesting
- Blood Diamond - Leonardo DiCaprio's atrocious Afrikaaner accent put me off. May watch it some day to indulge in some gleeful DeBeers bashing
- Children of Men - Very excited about this one. Alfonso Cuaron is a guy to watch out for.
- Flags of our Fathers/ The Sands of Iwo Jima - will probably watch these two Clint Eastwood pics back to back. I like the fact that Iwo Jima is from the Japanese perspective
- Happy Feet - Cute and cuddly, cute and cuddly! (Physically fit?)
- Lady in the Water - Couldn't muster the courage to watch this. Netflix Ahoy!
- Little Miss Sunshine - Indie comedy with a lot of hype about it
- Nacho Libre - I like Jack Black, but won't pay $5.5 to see him in tights!
- Over the Hedge - The over-caffienated squirrel I like :) Will see it soon.
- Rocky Balboa - Very curious about Stallone's farewell to his (favorite?) character
- Stranger Than Fiction - I like the premise of this, but Will Ferrell? He's not my favorite.
- The Breakup - Jennifer Aniston butt naked. :D Need I say more? But held off from watching this cuz I believe its a saddening tale.
- The Fountain - Very experimental this one is. And intriguing. And I like both Jackman and Weisz.
- The Illusionist -
- The Queen - Curious about this one!
- United 93/ World Trade Center - Didn't want to indulge in reliving 9/11 really. But I understand both these movies are devoid of jingoism (although they are very sentiment evoking). May watch later.
As you can see, I have more movies to watch than I have watched already... so I'm off! :)
Peace... Out.

Little Miss Sunshine is quite nice. Nacho Libre is decent.
Babel - was nicely made with all ingredients for awards, but you'll feel like you've seen the various bits somewhere else...gives you a i've-seen-this feeling ...
Hello!
It would probably be very uncool to call you mama, on the internet, but I couldn't just call you Hrishi.
How're you Hrishi mama? I hope you're well.
Amruta Nargundkar here. I think the only time we met was five years ago when I came to Aurangabad on my way to Australia. But I've heard that lots of exciting things have happened to you since then!
I watched Pirates 2 (who didn't!) and Casino Royale, and I loved them both. I couldn't watch A Scanner Darkly and Lake House, but I'd have loved to greatly. And I didn't want to watch The Departed because I didn't want to risk seeing my dear Marty make a fool of himself. I doubt he would have, not completely, but the Hong Kong crowd at Uni was already sneering that he copied their movie.
and I loved Monster House and The Devil Wears Prada, particularly the latter.
Do you watch Indian films? 2006 was a fabulous year for Bollywood... innovation, even in mainstream cinema, that we've hardly seen before. The best part is Hindi film distributors in Melbourne are now rich enough to get into the multiplex circuit, a lot of fun for us. But do you pay only 5 and a half dollars where you are? We pay 15 : (
As far as Hollywood films are concerned, the brightest thing on the 2007 horizon is THE SIMPSONS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAYAYAYAYAYA. I'm going to stay up all night until Village Cinemas updates the session times on the website and book the best seats in the house for the first day, first show.
Hey hey! I met Minu mavshi and the kids and Kedar kaka in Los Angeles. And I had a great time with them, Minu Mavshi took us to Universal studios and all around LA. What a big year for all of them! I hope they're settling down well in India.
I'm off now.I hope you have a nice day.
And have a happy new year (although it's already five days old now)
Writing to you was fun!
Cheers
